Stanford advances in NIT
Stanford, CA (Sports Network) – Chris Hernandez scored 14 points and dished
out four assists in leading the Stanford Cardinal to a 65-49 win over the
Virginia Cavaliers in the opening round of the NIT from Maples Pavilion.
Dan Grunfeld netted 12 points for the Cardinal (16-13), while Matt Haryasz
added 10 points and seven rebounds in the victory. Stanford will now hook up
with Missouri State in the first round of the NIT on Friday.
Sean Singletary led the way for Virginia (15-15) with 13 points and four
assists. J.R. Reynolds turned in 12 points in the loss, while Laurynas
Mikalauskas had 11 points and six rebounds.
The Cardinal shot 57.1 percent from the field in the first half, taking a
36-23 lead into the break.
In the second half, Stanford used a 9-0 run to put the game out of reach, as
it cruised to the 16-point victory.
Stanford won the game behind solid defense, as it forced 15 turnovers, while
also holding Virginia to a dismal 36.8 percent shooting effort from the field.
