Pepperdine and Westphal part company

Malibu, CA (Sports Network) – Pepperdine University announced the departure of
men’s head basketball coach Paul Westphal after a dismal 7-20 season.

The 2005-06 campaign was the worst for Westphal in his five seasons guiding
the Waves. He finished with a record of 76-72, but after a 22-9 first year the
program was basically a .500 team until bottoming out this past season.

“Coach Westphal is among the most outstanding people I’ve known or had the
pleasure to work with,” said Pepperdine athletic director Dr. John Watson in
making the announcement. “We extend him our best wishes for the future.”

Westphal took over at Pepperdine in April 2001 following a pair of NBA
coaching stints with Phoenix and Seattle. He played 12 seasons in the NBA for
Boston, Phoenix, New York and Seattle and was a five-time All-Star.

Dr. Watson said a search for Westphal’s replacement would begin as soon as
possible.
