Cox Arena evacuated after bomb scare
San Diego, CA (Sports Network) – Authorities evacuated the Cox Arena in
San Diego hours before a first-round NCAA championship basketball game between
Alabama and Marquette was to take place.
The arena, situated on the campus of San Diego State University, was emptied
after police were made aware of a suspicious package around 9:30 a.m. (pt).
After a thorough search of the canister, which was reportedly located in a
vendor cart, the FBI and police have since given the go-ahead for fans and
media to enter the arena.
The Marquette-Alabama tilt, the first of four games scheduled to take place in
San Diego Thursday, was originally slated to tip off at 12:40 p.m. local time.
Both teams were sent back to their hotel rooms shortly after the evacuation
and no official word has been given when the game will start.
