Ray returns, ‘Nova survives scare from Monmouth
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) – Allan Ray, playing in his first game since
suffering a devastating eye injury in the Big East Tournament, scored 19
points as the Villanova Wildcats battled through a poor shooting performance
to defeat the Monmouth Hawks, 58-45, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament
at the Wachovia Center.
Ray sustained a soft tissue injury to his right eye early in the second half
of Villanova’s 68-54 semifinal loss to Pittsburgh in the Big East Tournament.
Pittsburgh’s Carl Krauser inadvertently poked Ray in the eye as the two went
to the floor for the ball 32 seconds into the half.
Randy Foye scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the top-seeded
Wildcats (26-4), who will face eighth-seeded Arizona in the second round of
the Minneapolis bracket on Sunday. Kyle Lowry added nine points.
Dejan Delic scored 17 points for the Hawks (18-14), who beat Hampton 71-49 in
the play-in game. No other player for Monmouth scored in double figures. Tyler
Azzarelli tallied nine points and grabbed six boards.
