Dempsey officially named Rider head coach
Lawrenceville, NJ (Sports Network) – Rider University named Tommy Dempsey
as its permanent head men’s basketball coach on Thursday.
Dempsey spent this past season as the program’s interim head coach. At the age
of 32, he is now the third youngest head coach in Division I men’s basketball.
“I am very excited to be able to name Tommy Dempsey as the head men’s
basketball coach, ” said director of athletics Don Harnum. “He is a great fit
for Rider because of his regional recruiting contacts and his working
relationship with our current group of players.”
Dempsey came to Rider as an assistant during the 2003-04 season under Harnum.
He immediately named Fred Dupree, who has been an assistant with the Broncs
for the past five seasons, as the associate head coach.
Rider finished 8-20 in 2005-06 and produced both an All-Conference selection,
Jason Thompson, and an All-Conference rookie team member in Lamar Johnson.
“I am very honored to be the next head basketball coach at Rider University,
said Dempsey. “I will work tirelessly to reward (this) decision to name me as
the next head coach in a program with such a proud tradition.”
