Arizona’s Shakur declares for NBA Draft

Shakur declared himself eligible for the 2006 NBA Draft on Wednesday.
By not signing with an agent, Shakur can withdraw his name from the draft-
eligible list by June 21, setting up a possible return to the Wildcats for his
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound guard from Philadelphia averaged 11.2 points per
game, 3.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists per contest in 33 games last season.
“I think this is a good opportunity to further showcase my skills,” said
Shakur. “I’m keeping my options open, but I’m looking forward to showing
people exactly the type of player that I am.”
Shakur has averaged 9.5 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.6 assists in 100 career
games over three seasons with Arizona.
“Obviously, we’re hoping he’s going to return,” said Arizona head coach Lute
Olson. “He would be one of our captains next year and he has done a great job
of providing leadership in the weight room and on the floor already this off
season. I’m happy that he is completing his coursework and not hiring an
agent. That way he will be able to come back if he decides that it’s the best
thing for him.”
The 2006 NBA Draft is on Wednesday, June 28.
