Pitt’s Gray declares for draft, but does not hire agent

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) – University of Pittsburgh junior center Aaron
Gray announced on Thursday that he will enter the 2006 NBA draft but will not
sign with an agent.

By not signing with an agent, Gray reserves the right to return to school for
his senior season. The NBA Draft Early Entry withdrawal deadline is June 18,
2006. The NBA Draft will be held on June 28.

“Aaron carefully considered this decision and sought the right information
before making it,” said Pittsburgh head coach Jamie Dixon. “We’ve been
counseling him each step of the way and will continue to do so over the next
two months. This is a logical step for Aaron to take and we will support him
wholeheartedly.”

The Emmaus, PA native became the fourth player in school history to receive
the Big East Most Improved Player Award. He earned All-Big East first team
honors this past season, making him the sixth Panther to do so.

Gray led the conference in both rebounding (10.5) and double-doubles (18) and
was the only player in the Big East to average a double-double (13.9 ppg/10.5
rpg) for the 2005-06 season. He shot 52.6 percent from the floor and led the
team with 49 blocked shots.

“In discussing my options the last couple of weeks with my family and Coach
Dixon, I feel that it is in my best interest to declare for the NBA Draft,”
said Gray. “I will not hire an agent, leaving me the option to return to the
University of Pittsburgh for my senior season. The draft process will provide
me a great learning experience and will help me become a better player.”
