Georgia basketball player dies in car accident
Athens, GA (Sports Network) – University of Georgia basketball player Kevin
Brophy was killed late Thursday afternoon in a car accident near Greensboro,
Brophy, a native of Melbourne, Australia and junior guard on the Bulldogs
basketball team, was on his way to Savannah from Athens following his
participation at basketball clinic.
“We are devastated by the loss of Kevin,” said Georgia basketball coach Dennis
Felton. “This is just very tragic. Kevin was a beloved teammate and a pillar
of our program. We will miss his undeniable optimism, leadership and sincere
Originally a walk-on at Georgia, Brophy played in all 28 games in 2005 as
freshman. He started eight of those games and averaged 3.8 points.
After being awarded a scholarship prior to the 2006 season, Brophy averaged
0.9 points in 18 games as a sophomore.
“This is a shocking tragedy and we all have the deepest sympathy for Kevin’s
family,” said Georgia athletic director Damon Evans. “He was an outstanding
young man and leaves a tremendous void in our basketball, athletic
association, and university families.”
