UC-Riverside coach takes medical leave of absence
Riverside, CA (Sports Network) – UC Riverside head basketball coach David
Spencer has taken a medical leave of absence due to a non-disclosed illness.
Associate head coach Vonn Webb will serve as interim head coach during
Athletic director Stan Morrison wouldn’t specify the nature of Spencer’s
illness due to privacy issues, but said the coach will recover and be back
with the team.
“I understand that there will be many questions regarding my medical leave,
but I request that the public respect my family’s privacy during this
difficult time in our lives,” Spencer said.
Spencer is entering his second year as head coach of the Highlanders, who went
5-23 in 2005-06. UC Riverside starts its season Monday, Nov. 10 versus Iowa
“I would like to thank the UCR Athletics family for their support during this
difficult time in my life,” Spencer said. “It is clear that it is in the best
interests of both myself, my family, and the UCR Basketball program for me to
step away and to focus on regaining my strength and health. It is
disappointing that my illness will prevent me from the opportunity of coaching
such an outstanding group of young men, while representing this university.”
UCR was a basketball power at the Division II level, before moving up to
Division I play beginning with the 2000-01 season.
