No. 17 Washington downs Pepperdine
Seattle, WA (Sports Network) – Jon Brockman scored 25 points and added 12
rebounds to lead 17th-ranked Washington past Pepperdine, 99-91, in the BTI
Travelers Classic at the Bank of America Arena.
Quincy Pondexter had 21 points and seven rebounds and Justin Dentmon added 13
points for the Huskies (1-0), won had a 26-7 record during the 2005-06
Jason Walberg netted 18 points and Marvin Lea added 16 for the Waves (0-1),
who have steadily declined the past few seasons and last year finished just
Washington scored the first eight points of the game before Lea put in two
free throws to get Pepperdine on the board.
The Huskies, though, scored the next eight points with Pondexter netting the
final four and had a 16-2 lead less than five minutes in.
The Waves cut their deficit to 24-17 on a Lea free throw with 11 minutes left
in the first half, but the Huskies responded with an 11-4 burst and eventually
took a 52-37 lead heading into the locker room.
Pepperdine got to within nine points, 62-53, when Tomas Pranciliauskas drained
a trey less than six minutes into the second half.
Washington, however, responded with an 11-2 run to take control of the game
and were never seriously threatened the remainder of the game.
It was the first meeting between these schools…Spencer Hawes had 12 points,
seven assists and five rebounds for Washington…Shane Griffin had 15 points
for Pepperdine…Washington shot 52.9 percent in the game while Pepperdine
connected on 45.3 percent of its shots.
