Duke dominates Georgia Southern
Durham, NC (Sports Network) – DeMarcus Nelson poured in 16 points and had 10
rebounds as 11th-ranked Duke pounded Georgia Southern, 72-48, in the Durham
Regional championship of the CBE Classic at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Josh McRoberts added 16 points, six boards and three blocks for the Blue
Devils (2-0), who rolled past Columbia on Sunday night. Gerald Henderson
contributed 13 points for Duke, which shot 50 percent from the field and
limited Georgia Southern to just 30.6 percent shooting in the first-ever
meeting between the two schools.
Dwayne Foreman was the only player in double figures for the Eagles with 18
points. Diogo Salazar had seven points for the Eagles (1-1), who defeated UC-
Davis on Sunday.
Duke led 38-32 after ending the opening half on a 9-2 run. Nelson drilled a
three-pointer to close out the half and led the Blue Devils with 12 points on
4-of-5 shooting from the floor.
Duke also forced 10 turnovers in the first half and made 17-of-25 free throws.
The Blue Devils opened the second half of play with a 15-6 surge to take a
53-38 lead. Lance Thomas donated four points during the stretch after
gathering two offensive rebounds. Thomas finished with seven points and five
Duke’s lead ballooned to 18 points after McRoberts hit a long jump shot from
the left corner that made it 58-40 with just under 10 minutes left in the
The Blue Devils made it a 20-point game after McRoberts finished off a fast
break with an easy layup to make it 64-44 with less than four minutes to play
in the contest.
The Blue Devils have won 42 straight home games against non-conference
opponents…Duke finished the contest 22-of-32 from the charity stripe…The
Blue Devils held a 43-34 advantage in rebounds…Jon Scheyer had 11 points,
