Steele leads No. 10 ‘Bama over Middle Tennessee
St. Thomas, VI (Sports Network) – Ronald Steele scored 20 points to lead the
10th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide to a 71-62 victory over the Middle
Tennessee Blue Raiders in the first round of the Paradise Jam Tournament in
the U.S. Virgin Islands
Richard Hendrix scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Alabama (2-2),
which will play Iowa on November 19. Alonzo Gee added 12 for the Tide, who
played without senior forward Jermareo Davidson, whose girlfriend was killed
in a car crash last weekend.
“The bottom line was we found a way to win,” said Alabama coach Mark
Gottfried. “We missed Jermareo, but I was proud of the way our guys played. We
played hard. We didn’t necessarily play great, but they did play hard.”
Yamene Coleman, a redshirt freshman, started in place of Davidson and five
points and five rebounds.
Tim Blue led Middle Tennessee (1-2) with 13 points. Kevin Kanaskie scored 12,
and Nigel Johnson scored seven and pulled down seven boards for the Blue
Middle Tennessee will play the loser of the Toledo-Iowa game on Saturday.
