James stars as Marquette routs Eastern Michigan
Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) – Dominic James scored 17 points and Wesley
Matthews added 15, leading 16th-ranked Marquette to a 95-62 rout of Eastern
Michigan at the Bradley Center.
James added six assists and connected on 3-of-6 three-point tries for the
Golden Eagles (4-0), who finished 13-of-27 from beyond the arc. Lazar Hayward
scored 13 points and Dan Fitzgerald contributed 12 in the victory.
Devon Dumes scored 16 points to lead Eastern Michigan (1-3). He was the only
Eagle in double figures, as Carlos Medlock and Jarred Axon each chipped in
Eastern Michigan scored the first six points of the game, but a 7-0 run gave
Marquette a 14-11 advantage midway through the opening half. A three-pointer
by Dumes pulled Eastern Michigan within 16-15, but Marquette followed with the
next 11 points.
Jerel McNeal scored five during the run and a layup by Lawrence Blackledge
capped the surge to give Marquette a 27-15 advantage with just over six
minutes left in the half.
Eastern Michigan responded with a 9-3 run — with the all of the points coming
on threes — to pull within six. Another shot from beyond the arc by Dumes
kept Eastern Michigan within six a few minutes later, but Marquette closed the
half with a 9-3 burst to take a 44-32 lead into the break.
After Eastern Michigan clawed within nine to start the second half, James
heated up from the outside with a pair of threes during an 11-2 run that made
it an 18-point game.
Eastern Michigan got only as close as 13 from there and a 14-0 run midway
through the half extended the Marquette lead to 32.
Eastern Michigan shot just 33.3 percent from the field and hit only 8-of-21
three-point tries…Marquette will continue its early-season schedule this
week at the CBE Classic in Kansas City. First up will be Texas Tech on Monday,
with a game against either Duke or Air Force on Tuesday.
