Lofton paces No. 25 Tennessee past Coppin State
Knoxville, TN (Sports Network) – Chris Lofton scored a team-high 19 points as
the Tennesee Volunteers torched the Coppin State Eagles, 99-65, at Thompson-
Duke Crews added 13 points, and Wayne Chism recorded his first-ever double-
double on 11 points and 11 rebounds for Tennessee (4-0), which shot 56 percent
from the field (36-of-64).
JaJuan Smith poured in 11 and Ryan Childress backed that up with 10.
Tywain McKee recorded a game-high 21, while Antwan Harrison and Ruben Britt
notched 10 apiece for Coppin State (0-3), which hit for only 39 percent from
the floor (22-of-57). The Eagles have lost their last 29 non-conference games.
The Vols opened up the game on a modest 8-4 run, and gradually expanded that
lead to 30-17 on a Childress layup with 6:57 left in the half. The margin
expanded to 16, at 46-30 on a Lofton three-ball with 2:25 left, and Tennessee
would go to the break with a 51-33 lead.
Tennessee opened up the second half on a scorching 22-8 run, stretching the
lead to 73-41 with Tony Passley’s jumper 8:34 in. It became a 34-point
affair, 92-58 with 4:09 left, on a Josh Tabb three-pointer.
Despite the victory, Tennessee committed only two fewer turnovers than Coppin
State (24-22)…The Vols sank 13-of-24 from beyond the arc, while the Eagles
made only 6-of-20 attempts…Tennessee plays Butler on Wednesday in the NIT
Season Tip-off at Madison Square Garden, and Coppin State returns to action
Tuesday, hosting Winston-Salem.
