Edwards, Huskies rout Albany
Storrs, CT (Sports Network) – Gavin Edwards recorded 16 points and grabbed
five rebounds while Marcus Johnson totaled 14 points and six boards as No. 18
Connecticut routed Albany, 86-55, at Gampel Pavilion.
The game was nowhere near as close as last season’s first-round contest in the
NCAA Tournament. The Great Danes were attempting to become the first 16th-seed
to knock off a No. 1 seed, and led the talented Huskies in the second half
before falling down the stretch in a 72-59 defeat.
A.J. Price added 13 points and Hasheem Thabeet donated 12 points and seven
boards for the Huskies (5-0), who have won each of their games at home this
Jamar Wilson led Albany (2-2) with 18 points while Jason Siggers had 16 points
and seven rebounds. Albany shot just 35 percent from the floor and committed
21 turnovers. The Huskies scored 35 points off those miscues.
The Great Danes hung tough early, holding a 15-13 edge eight minutes in.
However, the Huskies ran off 13 straight points later in the period to take a
Jerome Dyson scored five of the points, and Johnson’s dunk and layup
culminated the stretch with 4:21 left in the half. UConn held a 47-31 edge at
Jeff Adrien, who tallied 11 points, drained a jumper to push the lead to 63-42
with just over 10 minutes to play, and Albany only got as close as 18 the rest
of the way.
UConn shot 58 percent from the floor despite making just 1-of-9 from beyond
