Vasquez, Terrapins remain undefeated with win over Illinois

Champaign, IL (Sports Network) – Freshman Greivis Vasquez netted 17 points and
dominated down the stretch as 23rd-ranked Maryland remained undefeated by
besting Illinois, 72-66, at Assembly Hall in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Mike Jones had a game-high 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting for the Terrapins
(8-0), who snapped the Illini’s non-conference winning streak at 40 games.
James Gist chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds while Bambale Osby
tallied 10 with eight boards for Maryland.

Shaun Pruitt paced Illinois, who lost a non-conference game at home for the
first time in 52 tries, with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Warren Carter added 13
points and 11 boards for the Illini.

Maryland stormed out of the gates with a 16-4 run, capped by a Jones three
with 14:36 left in the half.

But, Illinois hung in and got back in the game by closing the opening frame
with a 14-4 burst to draw within five, 33-28, heading to the locker room.

The Illini kept chipping away early in the second half and evened things at 39
when Rich McBride drained a three with a little over 13 minutes remaining.

Things remained tight as the game headed toward the stretch. Illinois trailed
by just one, 59-58. when Vasquez took over. He pulled down a Pruitt miss,
raced up the floor and found a wide open Osby underneath for an easy layup to
make it 61-58 with just 2:59 remaining.

Vasquez continued to hurt the Illini from there. The freshman guard calmly
drained a pair from the line and, after Meacham matched him with two free
throws of his own, Vasquez stunned the Illini with a driving lay-in to make it
65-60 with 1:23 left.

Illinois could not recover as Maryland held on to remain undefeated.
