Crump leads Purdue past Virginia
West Lafayette, IN (Sports Network) – Tarrance Crump hit a game-winning
floater with 1.2 seconds to play to give the Purdue Boilermakers a 61-59 win
over the 25th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers.
Carl Landry had 19 points and eight rebounds while David Teague added 14
points and eight boards for the Boilermakers (5-1), who shot 38.6 percent from
Sean Singletary netted a game-high 21 and Mamadi Diane chipped in 17 points
for the Cavaliers (4-1), who connected on 38.2 percent of their shots from the
With the Boilermakers ahead 57-53, the Cavaliers took the lead with a pair of
treys, the latter of which came off the hands of Chris Lutz and made the score
59-57 with almost 1 1/2 minutes to play.
After a Singletary steal, he tied the game with a pair from the line, but
Purdue had possession with under 30 ticks remaining.
The Boilermakers ran time off the clock before Crump was left open after a
high screen, and he made the most of the opportunity with a floater from just
inside the elbow with 1.2 seconds left.
J.R. Reynolds, though, stepped on the sideline after taking the inbounds pass
to give Purdue the ball back with one second and seal the victory.
Teague’s trey gave Purdue an 8-6 lead, but the Cavaliers reeled off a 9-1 run,
capped by Adrian Joseph’s three-pointer, for a 15-9 margin.
Trailing 19-14, the Boilermakers scored 10 of the final 14 points of the half,
including eight points from Landry, to move in front 26-23 after the opening
20 minutes of play.
Jason Cain’s layup narrowed the gap to one, 26-25, but Purdue used a 14-5
surge, highlighted by consecutive dunks from Gordon Watt and Teague, extended
the lead to 39-30.
However, Virginia rallied with a 15-4 burst behind threes from Singletary,
Joseph and Diane to take a 45-43 margin with almost 10 minutes to play.
Virginia was 2-11 on the road last season…The Cavaliers shot 6-of-11 from
long distance in the second half…Singletary has hit his last 27 free throw
attempts…Purdue welcomes Delaware St on Saturday while the Cavaliers play
their first ACC contest of the season against North Carolina State on
