Green leads Butler’s rout of Cleveland State
Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) – Mike Green scored 16 points and grabbed
eight rebounds to lead the 19th-ranked Butler Bulldogs to a 70-45 rout of the
Cleveland State Vikings.
A.J. Graves scored 14 for Butler (9-0, 1-0 Horizon League), while Brandon
Crane added 10 for the Bulldogs. Brian Ligon and Pete Campbell scored eight
points each for Butler.
Kevin Francis and J’Nathan Bullock scored 11 points apiece for the Vikings
(5-4, 0-1). Francis also pulled down eight boards for Cleveland State, which
had a four-game winning streak snapped with the blowout loss.
A layup by Bullock brought the Vikings to within 39-30 with 14:11 left in the
game, but Butler ripped off an 18-2 run to put the game out of reach. A layup
by Drew Steicher gave the Bulldogs a 57-32 lead with 6:45 left in the second
half, a 25-point advantage that Butler did not relinquish.
The Horizon League foes played a tight first half, but Butler pulled away with
a run in the last three minutes. A layup by Patrick Tatham brought the Vikings
to within 22-20 with 3:37 left, but the Bulldogs closed the half on a 13-2 run
to take control of the game.
Campbell hit two threes, and Graves also hit a trey to lead the run.
A three-pointer by Campbell with eight seconds left gave Butler a 35-22
lead going into the half.
Cleveland State shot a measly 33 percent from the field, an 18-of-54
performance, against a 52 percent game for Butler, on a 25-of-48 night…The
teams were evenly matched on the boards, with the Vikings pulling down 30
boards to 29 Bulldogs rebounds…Butler hit 15-of-17 from the charity stripe,
or 88 percent, while the Vikings only hit 5-of-11, for 45 percent…Butler
leads the all-time series 20-5.
