Hunter and Ohio State crush Cleveland State
Columbus, OH (Sports Network) – Othello Hunter scored 17 points and grabbed 11
rebounds as fifth-ranked Ohio State rolled past Cleveland State, 78-57.
Freshman Greg Oden, playing in just his second career game, was a perfect 8-
for-8 from the floor for 16 points and had three blocks. Mike Conley Jr. added
12 points, five boards and five assists for the Buckeyes (8-1), who have won
two straight since their lone loss of the season, a defeat at the hands of
North Carolina to close out November.
J’Nathan Bullock had 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting for the Vikings (5-6), who
were defeated for the third straight game in blowout fashion. The team was
dropped by Butler 70-45 on December 2nd before getting hammered by Kansas
State 93-60 three days later.
Joe Davis had 12 points in the loss while Tristan Crawford grabbed a team-high
Ohio State grabbed control early with a 12-0 run to open the game. Oden scored
eight during the run and capped it with a dunk 3:06 in. Cleveland State,
though, netted 10 of the game’s next 11 points as Victor Morris’ three-pointer
made it a 13-10 game.
Ohio State then countered with a 10-3 burst to go up 23-13. Bullock stopped
the bleeding with a layup at 9:38, but the Buckeyes scored the next six to go
Cleveland State put together a run to get back into the game, reeling off 10
in a row to climb within 29-25. Carlos English hit two three-pointers during
the run and his second trey capped the burst with 5:52 remaining.
Then, after trading three-pointers, Ohio State went on a 9-3 run to close out
the half and take a 41-31 edge into the break.
The Buckeyes outscored the Vikings 37-26 in the second half as the game turned
into a rout.
Hunter helped put the game away midway through the second half when he netted
eight straight points to put Ohio State ahead 58-41 with 11:32 left. The
Buckeyes’ lead hit 20 at 67-47 with 4:52 to go on a layup by Conley Jr.
Ohio State shot a blistering 54 percent from the floor while Cleveland State
shot just 38 percent…Ron Lewis had nine points for the Buckeyes while Ivan
Harris chipped in with eight…English ended with nine points…Ohio State won
the battle of the boards, 45-21.
