Foster lifts Vandy to upset win over Georgia Tech
Nashville, TN (Sports Network) – Shan Foster netted 25 points to lead the
Vanderbilt Commodores to a 73-64 victory over the 25th-ranked Georgia Tech
Derrick Byars added 18 points and dished out five assists for the Commodores
(5-3), who have won four straight. Alex Gordon added 14 points and six assists
in the victory.
Vandy also snapped a nine-game losing streak against ranked opponents dating
back to last season.
Thaddeus Young had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds for the
Yellow Jackets (6-3), who have lost three of their last four games overall.
Lewis Clinch had 13 in defeat and Jeremis Smith scored 10 points and had eight
Trailing for the majority of the second half, Vanderbilt rattled off a 12-0
run to take a 57-50 lead midway through the stanza. Foster and Byars jump
started the surge with back-to-back three-pointers and JeJuan Brown followed
with six straight points.
Vandy’s lead grew to 11 points after Foster drilled a three-pointer off the
left wing to make it 63-52 with about 7 1/2 minutes remaining in the contest.
The Yellow Jackets pulled to within 63-59 with about four minutes remaining
after Young’s slam dunk off a fast break capped a 7-0 run.
Georgia Tech was unable to get any closer the rest of the way as the
Commodores sealed the victory by hitting their free throws down the stretch.
The Yellow Jackets went into the break with a slim 34-33 edge led by Young’s
11 points and six rebounds in the first half.
Foster and Gordon each had 12 points at halftime for the Commodores.
Vanderbilt leads the all-time series at 37-32…The Commodores shot 51 percent
from the field and were 8-of-20 from beyond the arc…The Yellow Jackets
turned the ball over 25 times.
