Syracuse routs Colgate
Syracuse, NY (Sports Network) – Demetris Nichols scored 28 points, as No. 21
Syracuse pulled away in the second half for a 79-52 win over Colgate at the
Andy Rautins added 13 points and Terrence Roberts added 12 points and eight
rebounds for the Orange (8-2), who beat the Raiders for the 41st straight
time. Syracuse also bounced back after consecutive defeats to Wichita State
and Oklahoma State.
Nichols made a school-record six consecutive three-pointers in the second
Kyle Chones had 18 points for Colgate (4-4), which struggled by going 8-of-31
from the field in the second half, on the way to its second loss in three
The Orange led by just five at the half, but started the final 20 minutes with
a substantial run. A three-pointer by Josh Wright capped a 15-3 spurt to
begin the second half, extending the margin to 50-33 with 14:39 remaining.
Not only did Colgate not get within double digits the rest of the way, but
that was just the beginning of the rout.
Eric Devendorf’s layup ended a string of 15 consecutive Orange points, moving
the score to 73-43 with 8:38 remaining.
Syracuse shot 54.7 percent for the game, and made 16-of-25 from the floor over
the final 20 minutes.
Alex Woodhouse was Colgate’s second-leading scorer with nine points.
The Orange trailed early, but Wright and Rautins hit back-to-back three-
pointers for a 10-6 Syracuse advantage. A Matt Gorman three extended the
margin to 17-10.
Watkins’ jam moved Syracuse to a 25-16 cushion with 7:32 left in the half, but
Chones scored the next five points to keep Colgate close. The Orange led 35-30
Colgate shot 33.3 percent fro the game, including 2-of-16 from three-point
range…Syracuse made 13-of-21 shots from arc, including 6-of-8 from
Nichols…Darryl Watkins had four of Syracuse’s eight blocks.
