Creighton upends No. 24 Xavier
Omaha, NE (Sports Network) – Anthony Tolliver scored 17 points and Nate Funk
added 15 as Creighton upended 24th-ranked Xavier, 73-67, at the Qwest Center.
Isacc Miles had nine points, while Dane Watts had eight points and 10 rebounds
for the Bluejays (4-2), who improved to 4-0 at home this season.
Drew Lavender scored 13 points and Stanley Burrell finished with 12 for the
Musketeers (7-2), who saw their four-game winning streak come to an end.
Holding on to a one-point lead early in the first half, the Bluejays ripped
off 10 straight points, capped by Tolliver’s three-point play that gave
Creighton a 19-8 lead with just over eight minutes to play before halftime.
With the lead up to 12, Josh Duncan dropped in a layup and Burrell converted
two free throws to cut Xavier’s deficit to 34-26 at the break.
A Burrell trey and a Justin Doellman jumper brought Xavier within 52-48 with
just over nine minutes to play, but Funk answered with a layup as the
Musketeers got no closer than five the rest of the way.
It was Xavier’s first true road game of the season…The Musketeers still own
a 7-6 edge over Creighton in the all-time series, although the Bluejays have
won the last three meetings.
