Dudley helps BC get by No. 23 Maryland
Chestnut Hill, MA (Sports Network) – Jared Dudley scored 20 points and
grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Boston College over 23rd-ranked Maryland, 73-62,
at Conte Forum in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both programs.
Tyrese Rice added 17 points and Sean Williams had 10 points, 11 rebounds and
seven blocks for the Eagles (6-2, 1-0 ACC), who have won five in a row. Sean
Marshall tallied 12 points for BC, which used an 11-3 run in the final minutes
to pull away.
James Gist had 17 points and 10 boards to lead the Terrapins (9-2, 0-1), who
have lost two of three after opening the season with eight straight wins.
The Eagles led 45-34 following a 6-0 surge early in the second half, but
Maryland slowly chipped away at the lead and following an 11-4 run drew within
four points late in the second half. Mike Jones’ three-pointer with 6 1/2
minutes remaining capped the burst, drawing the Terrapins within 58-55.
Boston College, though, responded by scoring 11 of the next 14 points to pull
away for good. Dudley’s layup with 1:21 left ended the surge to put the Eagles
ahead 69-59 and they cruised to the finish.
Jones and Bambale Osby each had 10 points for Maryland.
Boston College used a 13-3 run in the early stages of the contest to open up a
19-10 cushion. Rice had eight points during the surge, capping it with
a three-pointer nearly seven minutes into the contest.
Later, after Maryland responded to tie the game at 23-23 following a D.J.
Strawberry dunk with 8 1/2 minutes left, the Eagles used a 13-4 run to go
ahead 36-27. Dudley scored the final seven points of the burst, allowing
BC to carry a 38-29 lead into the break.
Osby also had nine rebounds…Strawberry ended with just five points…Dudley
ended the game with 1,654 career points, moving him into 10th on the school’s
all-time lists…Maryland leads the all-time series 4-3.
