Shakur leads No. 10 Arizona over Houston
Tucson, AZ (Sports Network) – Mustafa Shakur scored 17 points and pulled down
six rebounds to lead the No. 10 Arizona Wildcats over the Houston Cougars
Ivan Radenovic scored 16 and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Wildcats. Marcus
Williams scored 15 and grabbed 12 boards for Arizona (8-1), which won its
eighth straight game after losing its opener to Virginia. Chase Budinger
scored 15 points, and Jawann McClellan added 10 points and seven boards to
help Arizona breeze to the win.
Robert McKiver led Houston (4-3) with 13 points and five boards. Dion Dowell
and Lanny Smith scored 12 points each, with Dowell raking in six rebounds as
well. Oliver Lafayette scored 10 and grabbed seven boards for Houston, which
has dropped three of four after a 3-0 start.
Arizona blasted open what was already a blowout on a 17-3 run in the second
half. A Nick Mosley basket brought Houston to within 67-50 with 7:30 left in
the game, but the Cougars could only hit one basket over the next five
minutes, a stretch that saw the Arizona lead expand to 84-53 on a Nic Wise
three with 2:54 left.
The Cougars hung tight in the first half, and a McKiver layup brought
Houston to within 24-23 with 7:37 left. Arizona answered with nine straight,
though, closed by a Daniel Dillon three and two Radenovic free throws that put
the Wildcats up 33-23 with 3:35 remaining in the half.
Houston trailed 41-33 at the intermission.
Houston still holds a 5-4 advantage in the all-time series between the two
schools…Arizona is 156-19 since the 1997-98 season when scoring at least 80
points, and 5-1 this year.
