McRoberts, Duke hold off Kent State
Durham, NC (Sports Network) – Josh McRoberts scored 19 points, pulled down six
rebounds and swatted six shots as sixth-ranked Duke held off a tough Kent
State club, 79-72, at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
DeMarcus Nelson added 18 points for the Blue Devils (10-1), who won their
sixth consecutive contest. Jon Scheyer donated 17 points while Greg Paulus
Omni Smith was spectacular for the Golden Flashes (5-4) with 33 points but he
did have 10 turnovers. Chris Singletary chipped in with 11 points for Kent
State, which lost for the third time in four games, while Haminn Quaintance
and Mike Scott each had 10.
Duke found itself down by three points, 55-52, after a Singletary tip-in
with just over 10 minutes left. But, the Blue Devils awoke and went on a 15-2
run to take control of things. McRoberts’ layup, with 5:04 remaining, gave
Duke a double-digit lead, 67-57.
The Golden Flashes refused to give in, however. Smith connected on a jumper to
draw Kent State within five, 72-67, with 1:36 on the clock.
Duke then managed to make enough free throws down the stretch to hold on.
Duke leads the all-time series, 2-0…Duke had nine blocks in the game to just
two for Kent State…Quaintance had 10 assists in the game.
