Drexel upends 23rd ranked Syracuse
Syracuse, NY (Sports Network) – Frank Elegar scored 27 points and pulled down
10 rebounds to lead the Drexel Dragons to an 84-79 upset of 23rd-ranked
Drexel (7-2) pulled away with a 14-4 run midway through the second half, and
held off a late Orange charge to a gain a big road win.
Dominick Mejia scored 16 points for Drexel, which won its fifth in a row.
Bashir Mason scored 14 points for the Dragons, who followed an impressive win
over Villanova with a victory over a ranked Syracuse team.
Demetris Nichols led Syracuse (9-3) with a game-high 31 points and nine
rebounds. Darryl Watkins scored 14 points and grabbed 13 boards for the
Orange, who had a modest two-game winning streak snapped. Josh Wright scored
11 points for Syracuse.
A Paul Harris three-point play brought Syracuse to within 81-78 with 36
seconds left, but Drexel hit three free throws, and the Orange were unable to
sink another field goal as the Dragons held on for the victory.
A Watkins jumper tied the game at 57-57 with 11:20 left in the second half,
but Drexel responded by running off seven straight, starting a 14-4 stretch
that put the Dragons up ten. Elegar’s jumper put Drexel up 71-61 with 5:37
The Dragons started strong, leading 20-15 after a Mejia three, but Syracuse
fought back, taking a 43-36 lead into halftime after an Andy Rautins three-
ball with four seconds left.
This was Drexel’s first win over Syracuse, as the Dragons dropped the previous
two meetings between the teams. Drexel’s previous win, 81-76 over Villanova on
Dec. 9, was it’s first in 18 all-time contests…Though shooting 40 percent on
the game, the Orange only hit 13-of-41 field goals (31.7 percent) in the
second half, while the Dragons hit 15-of-30 (50 percent) in the final 20
