James, McNeal lead No. 19 Marquette over Oakland

Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) – Dominic James poured in 20 points to go along
with nine assists and six rebounds as 19th-ranked Marquette cruised past
Oakland, 80-62.

Jerel McNeal scored 17 points and had six steals and five boards for the
Golden Eagles (11-2), who have won two straight after a setback to Wisconsin
on December 9th.

Erik Kangas scored a team-high 16 points, while Derick Nelson had 11 points,
five rebounds and five assists for the Grizzlies (6-8), who have dropped four
in a row.

Oakland surprisingly led for most of the first half, taking a 30-22 after two
Vova Severovas free throws with eight minutes to play before the Golden Eagles
finally came to life. Led by McNeal and Ousmane Barro, Marquette reeled off 10
straight points, eventually taking the lead on a McNeal jumper with just over
five minutes to play.

The Golden Eagles took a 40-36 lead into the break and then blew the game open
in the second half with a 24-7 run that was capped by a James’ trey that made
it 68-50 with 7:10 left to play. Oakland did not threaten the rest of the way.

Game Notes

Barro finished with 11 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Wesley Matthews added 10 points…Severovas ended with 10 points for
Oakland…Marquette shot 59 percent from the floor…The Grizzlies shot just
31 percent.
