Donovan sets school record as Gators down Stetson

Gainesville, FL (Sports Network) – Walter Hodge paced five Florida players
with 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting, as the fifth-ranked Gators bested the
Stetson Hatters, 88-67, to give head coach Billy Donovan the school record for
most career wins.

The win was Donovan’s 236th at Florida, surpassing Norm Sloan for the most in
school history.

Joakim Noah had 16 points and eight rebounds while Corey Brewer ended with 15
points, six boards and five assists for the Gators (10-2), who have won three
in a row and four of five.

Taurean Green added 11 points and eight assists, while Dan Werner had 10
points and six rebounds in the win.

Garfield Blair had 18 points and four assists for the Hatters (3-8), who have
lost four in a row. Sheldon Oliver donated 14 points in defeat.

Florida shot a blistering 61 percent from the floor, while Stetson countered
with a respectable 51 percent, but hit nine less shots.

Stetson netted the game’s first seven points and held the lead until a three
by Hodge tied the game at 15-15 with 14 minutes left in the half. Then, after
a jumper by Blair put the Hatters in front by two, Florida went on a 9-0 run,
ignited by Werner’s three-pointer.

The teams traded baskets and Florida led 26-21 after Kris Thomas’ jumper for
Stetson before the Gators ripped off 11 straight points. Noah started things
off with a dunk and back-to-back layups by Green and Brewer at the end of the
burst gave the Gators a 37-21 edge with 4:42 remaining in the half.

Florida led 44-30 at the break.

Consecutive three-pointers by Eric Diaz and Gabe McMillen pulled Stetson to
within 10 at 46-36 early in the second half, but Florida responded with seven
straight.

A free throw from Tim Lang stopped the bleeding before Noah netted four
straight points to give the Gators a 57-37 edge with 14:37 to play.

Three straight baskets by the Hatters pulled them within 62-49 with 9:20 to
go, but Florida later stretched its lead back to 20 at 79-59 with under four
minutes to go after a three by Hodge.

Game Notes

Donovan got his 236th win in his 336th game as Florida’s coach. It took Sloan
427 contests over 15 years to get his 235th win…The Gators are 50-10 against
non-conference foes over the last four years…Florida leads the all-time
series against Stetson 48-14 and have won 13 straight. The Gators are 6-0
against the Hatters under Donovan.
