Huskies down LSU

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) – Spencer Hawes scored a season-high 23 points
and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the 17th-ranked Washington Huskies over
the 12th-ranked LSU Tigers at Bank of America Arena.

Jon Brockman netted 19 points and had 14 rebounds for the Huskies (9-1), who
never trailed in the contest. Quincy Pondexter added 15 points and Phil Nelson
contributed nine points off the bench.

Tasmin Mitchell led the Tigers (6-3) with 20 points. LSU lost for just the
second time in its last six games. The Tigers were making their first Seattle

for LSU.

The Huskies came out strong, opening the game on an 11-4 run capped by
Brockman’s layup. The sophomore scored seven points during the flurry, which
was briefly interrupted when LSU’s Tack Minor hit a layup of his own.

Washington’s offensive outburst continued, as Nelson’s three-pointer widened
the margin to 20-8 at 12:39. The Huskies held their biggest lead of the first
half, 39-20, with 7:36 to play and cruised into the break with a comfortable
50-36 cushion.

The second half was much of the same, with the outcome never in doubt.

Washington also won the battle of the boards, 44-34. The team came into the
contest out-rebounding opponents by nearly 13 boards per game.
