Duke polishes off Zags at the Garden
New York, NY (Sports Network) – Greg Paulus netted a career-best 20 points to
guide sixth-ranked Duke past No. 22 Gonzaga, 61-54, in the Aeropostale Classic
at Madison Square Garden.
Jon Scheyer tallied 14 points while Josh McRoberts had 11 points and 11
rebounds for Duke (11-1), which has won seven straight.
Jeremy Pargo had a game-high 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting and grabbed nine
boards for the Bulldogs (9-4), who have dropped two straight. Josh Heytvelt
scored 10 points, while senior standout Derek Raivio was limited to just four
“That was a tough, hard-nosed basketball game and definitely more of a grinder
game than we have been in,” said Gonzaga head coach Mark Few.
Duke shot just 34.5 percent from the field on the night and trailed by a
point, 21-20, at intermission, but came up big defensively in the second half.
That allowed McRoberts to make a pair of big plays to help seal the win. The
first was a baseline jumper with about 2:30 on the clock that gave the Blue
Devils a 52-46 cushion.
The Bulldogs moved back within four in the waning moments, but Duke struck
Paulus delivered a pass down to McRoberts in the block, then cut to the lane
as McRoberts fed it right back to him in rhythm. Paulus polished off the give-
and-go with a tough lay-in to push the lead back to six points and help clinch
“To make that pass and to show that poise, those kids did it,” said Duke head
coach Mike Krzyzewski.
This was the first-ever meeting between these two clubs…The Zags suffered
back-to-back losses for the first time since the 2002-03 campaign…The Blue
Devils and Bulldogs rank first and third, respectively, over the last eight
years in regard to wins among Division I programs.
