Nevada holds off Akron
Akron, OH (Sports Network) – Nick Fazekas scored 24 points and pulled down 11
rebounds as 25th-ranked Nevada survived to edge Akron, 73-71, at Rhodes Arena.
Ramon Sessions added 22 points for the Wolf Pack (10-1), who won their third
straight contest. Marcelus Kemp chipped in with 12 for Nevada.
Dru Joyce tallied 23 points for the Zips (7-3), who lost their second straight
encounter. Romeo Travis was the only other Akron player in double figures with
The Zips trailed by eight, 41-33, at the break but roared out of the gate in
the second half. Nate Linhart’s layup capped a 15-3 burst in the first five
minutes of the stanza to give Akron a 48-44 edge.
Kemp finally stopped the bleeding when he downed a pair of free throws with
just under 14 minutes remaining.
The game remained tight as things headed toward the stretch but, with the Zips
up 61-57 with under seven minutes to go, Nevada took over with an 8-0 burst.
Kemp highlighted the mini-spurt with a jumper and a pair of free throws to
give the Wolf Pack a 65-61 advantage with 4:16 left.
Akron wasn’t down, however, and continued to stick around. Joyce’s triple,
with 1:54 remaining, drew the Zips to within two, 71-69.
Thirty-four seconds later, Sessions got loose inside for lay-in to give
Nevada a little breathing room, 73-69.
Travis then blew a layup for Arkon but Quade Milum was there to clean things
up and slammed in the rebound to make it a one-basket game, 73-71, with 39
ticks on the clock.
After a Sessions missed a jumper with four seconds left, the Zips had one
last chance but Joyce came empty at the buzzer.
This was only the second meeting between two schools. Nevada captured the
first a season ago with a 68-61 decision at home in Reno during Bracket Buster
Saturday…Joyce was 5-of-6 from long range…Akron had a 21-game homecourt
winning streak broken.
