UConn crushes Coppin State
Hartford, CT (Sports Network) – Jeff Adrien paced six Connecticut players in
double figures with 16 points and also pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the
12th-ranked Huskies to an 84-41 rout of Coppin State at the Hartford Civic
Curtis Kelly netted 14 while A.J Price and Hasheem Thabeet each added 11
points for the Huskies (11-0), who won the rebounding battle 64-33. Price also
dished out eight assists and Thabeet grabbed 12 boards.
Ethan Kennedy scored 12 points and Tywain McKee had 11 points and nine
rebounds for Coppin State (2-10), who have lost five straight. Darryl Roberts
chipped in 10 points in the loss.
The Huskies jumped out to a 25-8 lead, including seven from Price and six from
Doug Wiggins, as Coppin State missed its first 14 shots and didn’t get on the
board until the 11:22 mark.
Connecticut then finished off the half with a 16-7 spurt, highlighted by back-
to-back dunks from Thabeet, for a 41-15 blowout.
UConn connected on 50 percent of its first-half shots from the floor, compared
to the Eagles, who drained just five field goals and shot a paltry 14 percent
from the floor, including 2-of-11 from long distance.
McKee’s layup cut the deficit in half, 54-27, but it was never a conetest in
the second half.
The Eagles got as close as 26 on a number of occasions, the last on Roberts
layup with just over seven minutes to play, narrowing the gap to 62-36, but
the Huskies closed out the game with a 22-5 burst.
Connecticut’s Craig Austrie and Jerome Dyson each donated 10 points…UConn
shot 49 percent from the floor, while the Eagles shot 21 percent from the
field…The Huskies open up conference play at West Virginia, while Coppin
State plays its third straight ranked opponent in Ohio State on Saturday.
