Vols rout Tennessee Tech
Knoxville, TN (Sports Network) – JuJuan Smith scored a career-high 23 points
to lead the 21st-ranked Tennessee Volunteers to a 101-77 rout of the Tennessee
Tech Golden Eagle at Thompson-Boling Arena.
Chris Lofton netted 14 while Ryan Childress had 13 points and 11 rebounds for
the Volunteers (11-2), who have won seven straight after dropping their
previous two games.
Ramar Smith donated 13 points and Duke Crews added 10 points and 10 boards for
Tennessee, which connected on 50 percent of its shots from the floor.
Belton Rivers chipped in 20 points and also grabbed six rebounds and Anthony
Fisher scored 16 for the Golden Eagle (5-7), who have lost three in a row.
Francis Kabore poured in 14 in the loss.
Rivers’ three gave Tennessee Tech a 29-26 lead, but the Volunteers responded
with 19 unanswered points, which began with a Childress free throw. Lofton’s
jumper evened the score and he capped the run with five straight points for a
Daniel Northern’s jumper cut the deficit to nine, 47-38, but Tennessee
closed out the half with nine straight points, including six points from
Smith, for a 56-38 halftime lead.
The game was never close in the second half, as Tennessee Tech never got
closer than 16, and that was on the Golden Eagle’s first basket of the second
Tennessee welcomes East Tennessee State on Saturday while Tennessee Tech next
plays at Samford on Tuesday…The Golden Eagle shot 39 percent from the
field…The Volunteers won the rebounding battle 47-43…Tennessee scored 20
points off 16 Tennessee Tech turnovers…Volunteers guard Dane Bradshaw dished
out nine assists…Northern finished with nine points and five rebounds.
