Air Force edges Colorado State

Fort Collins, CO (Sports Network) – Dan Nwaelele scored a game-high 22 points
for 20th-ranked Air Force, as it edged Colorado State, 81-75, at Moby Arena.

Jacob Burtschi and Tim Anderson poured in 17 points apiece for Air Force
(14-1, 1-0 MWC), winners of 10 straight games. Matt McCraw added 16,
including four three-pointers.

Jason Smith had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Colorado State (10-3, 0-1),
which saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end. Cory Lewis scored 18,
with four three-pointers of his own, and Stuart Creason picked up 12 points
and eight rebounds in a losing cause.

Colorado State got off on the right foot with an 8-5 lead, but Air Force
quickly gained equilibrium and forged ahead with just under five minutes
played in the first half.

The Falcons would never trail, and although the Rams at one stage drew within
a point, 22-21, Air Force ended the half on a 23-14 run to take a 10-point
halftime lead.

Air Force maintained that cushion throughout the early part of the second
half, but Colorado State slowly began to chip away. Lewis’ one-of-two from the
line with 8:21 to go brought the Rams within 62-60, and they did not trail by
more than three until Burtschi buried a three for a 70-64 Air Force lead with
3 1/2 minutes to play.

Colorado State did not threaten to overtake the visitors for the remainder
of the contest, and Air Force walked away with a comfortable six-point win.
