Chalmers stars as Kansas drops South Carolina
Columbia, SC (Sports Network) – Mario Chalmers netted 19 points to lead the
ninth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks over the South Carolina Gamecocks, 70-54.
Darrell Arthur had 17 points while Brandon Rush added 12 points and six
rebounds for the Jayhawks (13-2), who have won their last seven games.
Dwayne Day donated 13 points and Brandon Wallace chipped in 12 points and
pulled down nine rebounds for the Gamecocks (10-3), who had a six game winning
streak come to an end. Tre’ Kelley finished with 10 points and six assists in
Bryce Sheldon’s free throw knotted the game, 5-5, but the Jayhawks reeled off
a 22-8 burst, including 10 points from Chalmers, for a 27-13 lead.
The Gamecocks, though, closed the half with a 15-5 rally, capped by five
straight points from Day, including a three-pointer, to pull within 32-28.
A pair of Wallace free throws narrowed the gap to 49-42, but Kansas went on a
13-4 run, highlighted by Arthur’s three-point play, extending the margin to
62-46 with almost 4 1/2 minutes to play.
Kansas welcomes Oklahoma State while South Carolina plays at Georgia on
January 10…The Jayhawks connected on 58 percent of their shots from the
floor, while the Gamecocks shot 39 percent from the field…Kansas scored 23
points off 16 South Carolina turnovers…The Jayhawks’ bench outscored the
Gamecocks’ reserves 23-7.
