Green, No. 2 Gators take down Arkansas
Gainesville, FL (Sports Network) – Taurean Green netted 17 to lead the
second-ranked Florida Gators past the Arkansas Razorbacks, 79-72, at the
Corey Brewer added 13 points while Lee Humphrey scored 11 for the Gators
(15-2, 2-0 SEC), who have won eight straight. Joakim Noah had 11 points and
eight rebounds and Al Horford chipped in 10 points and five boards.
Darian Townes poured in 18 points and grabbed 10 boards while Sonny Weems
tallied 13 for the Razorbacks (12-4, 1-1), who had a four-game winning streak
snapped. Gary Ervin had 11 points and nine assists and Patrick Beverley scored
10 in the setback.
Florida jumped out to an 18-6 lead, including seven points from Green, but
Arkansas fought back with an 11-4 rally, capped by Steven Hill’s three-point
play, narrowing the gap to 22-17.
A pair of Brewer free throws pushed the margin to 31-23, but the Razorbacks
closed the opening frame with a 13-6 spurt, ending with Ervin’s tip-in as time
was winding down, cutting the deficit to 37-36.
Trailing 39-36, Charles Thomas’s jumper pulled Arkansas within one, but the
Gators reeled off an 11-2 burst, highlighted by Horford’s three-point play,
for a 50-40 lead.
A 14-3 rally from the Razorbacks, beginning with Townes jumper, gave the
Arkansas a short-lived slim lead, 54-53.
The Gators then tallied 12 of the next l4 points, including three-pointers
from Humphrey and Green, for a 65-56 cushion with nearly 5 1/2 minutes to
The Razorbacks got within five, 77-72, on Stefan Welsh’s three with 5.2 ticks
on the clock but that was as close as they would get.
The Gators shot 49 percent from the floor, while Arkansas connected on 42
percent of its shots from the field, including 2-of-15 from long
distance…Florida travels to South Carolina while the Razorbacks play at Ole
Miss on January 13.
