Flamed out: UIC stops Butler in OT
Chicago, IL (Sports Network) – Josh Mayo scored 19 points, including a clutch
three-pointer to give the host Flames the lead with 37 seconds left in
overtime, and Illinois-Chicago held on for a 73-67 upset of the 12th-ranked
Butler Bulldogs in a Horizon League battle.
T.J. Gray scored 13 points for the Flames (8-9, 3-1 Horizon), who had lost
four of five entering the game. Scott VanderMeer and Jovan Stefanov scored 11
points apiece for UIC, with VanderMeer grabbing 10 rebounds. Othyus Jeffers
raked in 12 rebounds and scored nine points for the Flames.
A.J. Graves led the Bulldogs (14-2, 3-1) with 31 points, and Brandon Crone
added 14 points and nine rebounds. Pete Campbell scored 12 points for Butler,
which had its four-game winning streak snapped.
Graves hit a three-pointer to give Butler a 67-66 lead with 47 seconds left in
overtime, but that was the last shot that a Bulldogs player would make. Mayo
drilled a three ten seconds later to put the Flames up 69-67, and Gray hit
four free throws in the last 15 seconds to ice the win.
A Jeffers free throw put UIC up 58-53 with 39 seconds left in regulation, but
the Bulldogs charged back to force an extra session. Graves hit a three with
20 seconds left that cut the deficit to 58-56, and two free throws to tie the
game at 58-58 with 16 ticks left.
The home team took advantage of a slow start by the Bulldogs, and led 9-1
after an Jeffers dunk with 13:13 left in the first half. Butler cut the
deficit to 11-7 after a Danijel Zoric layup with 10:22 remaining, but the
Flames made it clear that their upset bid was serious, and opened up an 18-9
lead on a Mayo three with 6:53 left in the half.
UIC led 22-15 at the intermission.
UIC outrebounded Butler, 51-38…Graves attempted 20 three pointers, making
seven…Both teams played Wright State in their previous games. UIC lost to
Wright St. by 14 points last Thursday, 76-62, while Butler torched Wright St.
by a 31-point margin, 73-42, last Saturday.
