Crone, Butler down South Dakota State
Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) – Brandon Crone netted 14 points to go
along with six rebounds, as the 12th-ranked Butler Bulldogs handed the South
Dakota State Jackrabbits a 62-47 defeat at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Pete Campbell added 11 points and Marcus Nellems added nine for the Bulldogs
(15-2), who responded after their first conference loss of the season, a 73-67
overtime setback to Illinois-Chicago, on Wednesday halted a four-game winning
Both Campbell and Nellems hit a trio of three-pointers, as Butler ended at 43
percent (10-of-23) from long distance and 22-of-43 overall.
Kai Williams paced the Jackrabbits (4-13) with 12 points to go along with five
rebounds, and Garrett Callahan had 11 points in South Dakota State’s third
Butler put the game away early, courtesy of a 24-3 run.
Campbell and Nellems began the burst with consecutive threes to make it 11-6,
and Drew Streicher capped the first part of the run with another trey to give
Butler an 18-6 lead with 7:27 remaining.
Andy Kleinjan stopped the bleeding for South Dakota State with a long-range
shot, but Nellems answered with a three, and Campbell’s three gave the
Bulldogs a 29-9 lead with 3:39 to play in the first half.
Butler led 33-14 at the break.
Three straight jumpers by Butler moved its advantage to 39-14 early in the
second. The Jackrabbits moved their deficit to under 20 at 45-26 after a three
by Matt Cadwell with 10:49 left on the clock.
South Dakota State never really threatened though, in the game.
Cadwell finished with seven points, as the Jackrabbits shot just 36 percent
from the floor…Mike Green finished with nine points and five rebounds for
the Bulldogs, who shot 51 percent from the floor…Butler defeated the
Jackrabbits for the third straight year.
