Villanova downs 20th-ranked Notre Dame
Villanova, PA (Sports Network) – Freshman Scottie Reynolds scored 27 points to
lead the sharp-shooting Villanova Wildcats to a 102-87 victory over 20th-
ranked Notre Dame.
Curtis Sumpter tallied 21 points, Dante Cunningham 19 and Mike Nardi 18 for
the Wildcats (12-5, 2-3 Big East), who have won two of their last three games.
Cunningham also had nine rebounds, as Villanova shot 56.7 percent from the
Russell Carter scored 26 points to pace the Fighting Irish (14-3, 3-2), who
had a two-game winning streak broken. Colin Falls ended with 17 points and
Luke Harangody added 13 for Notre Dame, which also got 11 points form Rob
Kurz. Notre Dame shot just 42.4 percent
It was a quick start for the Wildcats, as Sumpter’s three-pointer boosted the
lead to 16-6. The double-digit lead remained throughout most of the opening
half with Villanova on top 50-40 at the break.
Notre Dame never made a serious run in the second half. Carter’s three had the
Irish within 79-72 with 5:54 remaining, but Reynolds countered with a shot
from beyond the arc. It was one of 10 threes for Villanova, which ended 10-
of-21 from long distance.
Villanova also won the battle of the boards, 40-26, which included nine
rebounds from Will Sheridan.
The Wildcats will play 21st-ranked Texas in Philadelphia on Saturday…Notre
Dame’s next game will be Sunday at home versus South Florida…This was the
first of two meetings between Notre Dame and Villanova in a span of ten days.
