No. 13 Air Force soars over San Diego State
Colorado Springs, CO (Sports Network) – Jacob Burtschi scored 23 points and
grabbed nine rebounds to lead 13th-ranked Air Force over San Diego State,
56-51, at Clune Arena.
Dan Nwaelele added 11 points for the Falcons (18-2, 5-1 Mountain West), who
rebounded from only their second loss of the season to win for the 14th time
in 15 outings.
Air Force has now won 50 of its last 51 at home, including 26 in a row, which
is tied for the second-longest active streak in the country.
Brandon Heath and Jerome Habel each had 15 points to lead the Aztecs (13-6,
2-3), who had a two-game win streak halted and lost for the third time in five
After Habel converted a layup with 1:06 left to cap a 6-0 burst that gave San
Diego State a 51-50 lead, the Aztecs didn’t score again.
Nwaelele answered with a jumper with 46 seconds remaining to put the Falcons
Then, after Habel missed a jumper that could have put the Aztecs in the lead
with 18 seconds left, Nwaelele hit a pair of free throws two seconds later for
a three-point edge.
Heath then missed a potential game-tying three-pointer with seven seconds
remaining and Burtschi hit two free throws to ice the game.
Lorenzo Wade ended with 11 points and seven boards for San Diego State,
which shot 40 percent from the field but only hit 3-of-20 three-pointers.
Nick Welch had 10 points for the Falcons, who led 23-17 at halftime.
Air Force hit 39 percent of its shots, draining 9-of-26 from three…SDSU
outboarded Air Force 32-31…Heath had seven boards…Brigham Young has also
