Kurz, Irish trounce South Florida
South Bend, IN (Sports Network) – Rob Kurz netted 21 points, grabbed 10
rebounds and blocked four shots, as 20th-ranked Notre Dame cruised past South
Florida, 82-58, in a Big East Conference matchup at the Joyce Center.
Colin Falls added 14 points for the Fighting Irish (16-3, 4-2 Big East), who
rebounded nicely from their loss to the Villanova Wildcats on Wednesday.
Tory Jackson contributed 11 points for Notre Dame, which has won three of its
last four games overall.
The Irish also improved to an impressive 14-0 at home this season.
Kentrell Gransberry poured in a game-high 23 points and pulled down 11 boards
for the Bulls (10-10, 1-4), who have dropped five of their last six games.
Melvin Buckley had 11 points and McHugh Mattis added 10 in the loss for South
Trailing by one point, the Fighting Irish ripped off a 10-0 spurt to take a
35-24 lead with about 4 1/2 minutes remaining in the first half.
Notre Dame then ended the opening period on a 7-0 dash to go into the break
with a 42-26 advantage.
Kurz paced the Irish with 10 points in the opening 20 minutes as his team shot
44 percent from the field.
Notre Dame continued to run in front in the second half and a layup by Kurz,
followed by a free throw, made it a 20-point game at 60-40 with just under 12
1/2 minutes to play.
South Florida never threatened the remainder of the contest.
Notre Dame has won 16 straight home games dating back to last season…The
Fighting Irish lead the all-time series against South Florida, 2-0…Notre
Dame dominated the glass and outrebounded the Bulls, 45-30.
