Stillwater, OK (Sports Network) – Byron Eaton scored 17 points and Mario
Boggan had 13 points to lead 13th-ranked Oklahoma State over Oklahoma, 66-61,
at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
JamesOn Curry added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Cowboys (17-3, 3-2
Big 12), who have won six of their last eight contests. David Monds tallied 11
points and eight boards for Oklahoma State, which rebounded from Saturday’s
67-49 loss to Texas Tech to win for the first time since last week’s epic
105-103 3-OT win over Texas.
Nate Carter had 23 points and seven rebounds for the Sooners (11-7, 3-3), who
had a two-game win streak halted.
Leading 45-44 over seven minutes into the second half, Boggan spearheaded a
10-2 run to give the Cowboys control. Boggan scored five points during the
run, which was capped by an Eaton jumper with 6:49 left for a 55-46 cushion.
Oklahoma refused to go away, however. Down 60-52 late in the contest, David
Godbold started a 9-2 run with his first of two straight three-pointers.
Austin Johnson then ended the run with a trey of his own with 25.9 seconds
left to draw the Sooners within 62-61.
Boggan, though, hit a pair of free throws after being fouled with 24.6 seconds
remaining. And after Johnson missed a potential game-tying three-pointer with
six seconds on the clock, Tyler Hatch secured the rebound, was fouled with
four seconds remaining and hit both free throws to ice the win.
Godbold ended with just eight points for Oklahoma.
The first half was close throughout with the Sooners leading for most of the
stanza. However, the Cowboys ended the half with a 9-2 run to take the lead
heading into the locker room. Three Eaton free throws gave Oklahoma State the
lead during the run, which was capped by four straight points by Kennith
Cooper for a 38-34 advantage after 20 minutes of play.
Coming out of the break, Curry drained a three-pointer to increase the lead to
41-34 and cap a 12-2 surge.
Oklahoma, though — down 43-36 — scored six straight points to draw within
one point. Carter had four of the points, capping the burst with a layup at
the 16:32 mark.
