Frosh sensation Oden leads No. 5 Buckeyes over NU

Evanston, IL (Sports Network) – Freshman Greg Oden had 17 points while pulling
down 17 rebounds, as fifth-ranked Ohio State bested Northwestern, 59-50, in
Big Ten action at Ryan Center.

Ivan Harris netted 14 of his game-high 18 points in the first half while
grabbing seven rebounds for the Buckeyes (17-3, 5-1 Big Ten), who have won
four in a row while improving to just 2-3 in true road games.

Ohio State beat Northwestern for the second time in seven days despite turning
the ball over 14 times to the Wildcats’ eight. The Buckeyes posted a more
decisive 73-41 win at home over Northwestern on January 17.

Tim Doyle had 15 points and Sterling Williams added 11 for the Wildcats (11-9,
1-6), who have lost six of seven and are in last place in the conference.
Kevin Coble ended with 10 points in defeat.

A 10-2 run for Northwestern in the first half put the club in front 20-11. The
Wildcats hit a trio of three-pointers on the spurt, including two by Williams.

Ohio State then took control with a 12-0 burst to go in front 23-20. Harris
made it a two-point game with a three-pointer, while a dunk and free throw by
Oden put the Buckeyes in front with 2:15 left in the first half.

Back-to-back layups by Doyle moved Northwestern back in front by one with 1:01
remaining, but Ohio State closed out the half with four in a row to lead 27-24
at the break, and then netted nine of the second half’s first 11 points. Three
different Ohio State players hit treys, as Ron Lewis’ three-pointer made it
36-26 2:38 into the second half.

The Wildcats used back-to-back three-pointers by Coble and Williams to get
within 38-34, and after a free throw by Lewis, Northwestern made it a one-
point game after two straight layups from Doyle.

However, Oden answered with a pair of buckets, and a three by Jamar Butler
later gave Ohio State a 46-41 edge with 7:42 to play.

Northwestern failed to get closer than three the rest of the way as Ohio State
scored nine of the game’s final 11 points.
