Red Raiders score upset over sixth-ranked Aggies
Lubbock, TX (Sports Network) – Martin Zeno scored 22 points and hit three free
throws over the final 24.9 seconds, as Texas Tech upset No. 6 Texas A&M,
70-68, giving the Red Raiders their second victory over a top 10 team in less
than a week.
On Saturday, Texas Tech got past the fifth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks, 69-64.
Jon Plefka added 17 points and Jarrius Jackson scored 13 for the Red Raiders
(15-5, 4-1 Big 12), who won for the fifth time in six contests. Zeno went
13-of-14 at the charity stripe.
Acie Law had 26 points for the Aggies (16-3, 4-1), who had an 11-game
conference winning streak broken. Dominique Kirk tallied 12 points and Joseph
Jones 11 in a losing cause, as Texas Tech’s nine-game winning streak came to
Zeno hit one free throw with 24.9 seconds left for a 68-67 Texas Tech lead. He
missed the second try, but then stole an inbounds pass intended for Jones in
Zeno made two more foul shots with eight seconds remaining before Law was
fouled just past midcourt with 3.4 ticks left. Law made the first and
intentionally missed the second and got his own rebound. However, the ball
never hit the rim on the second try, and Texas Tech assumed possession.
A long pass to Zeno then ended the game, as he dribbled out the remaining
time, with the fans storming the court.
Texas Tech scored the game’s first seven points and were ahead by as many as
nine in the opening half, but the Aggies rallied for a 34-34 tie at the break.
It was tight throughout the final 20 minutes.
Texas Tech made 22-of-29 free throws and finished 10-of-18 from beyond the
arc…The Red Raiders hold a 62-53 lead in the all-time series…The last time
Texas Tech head coach Bob Knight won back-to-back games against teams ranked
in the Top 10 was in January 2002, his first season in West Texas.
