No.4 Ohio State gets by Michigan State
East Lansing, MI (Sports Network) – Greg Oden scored 16 points, grabbed 11
rebounds, and blocked four shots to lead the fourth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes
to a 63-54 win over the Michigan State Spartans.
Ron Lewis added 11 points for Ohio State (20-3, 8-1 Big Ten), which won its
seventh straight, including a 66-64 win over the Spartans last Saturday in
Columbus. Mike Conley Jr. and Jamar Butler added 10 points apiece for the
Drew Neitzel scored 24 points for Michigan State (17-7, 4-5), who lost their
third straight. Goran Suton scored 16 points and grabbed 10 boards for the
Neitzel put the Spartans on his back late, scoring 10 points in the last five
and a half minutes, including a three with 53.1 left to bring Michigan State
to within 57-54.
The Buckeyes hit their free throws down the stretch, though, and held on for
the conference win.
A Butler three put the Buckeyes up 37-30 with 15:42 left, but Michigan State
answered with six straight, and a Raymar Morgan jumper made it 37-36 with
13:32 left. Neitzel tied the game at 39 with a trey at the 12:19 mark, but
every time Michigan State seemed ready to get over the hump, the Buckeyes had
Oden started the game in flow, scoring nine of Ohio State’s first 15 points,
and a Lewis jumper staked the Buckeyes to a 19-8 lead with just under 10
minutes left in the first half.
Suton answered with a three-point play, followed by a jumper, cutting the
advantage to 19-13 with 9:14 left. The Buckeyes pushed the lead back to 23-13,
but the Spartans cut the deficit to 26-21 by halftime.
This was Michigan State’s first home loss of the year…Ohio State won despite
shooting only 38 percent from the field, and 30 percent (6-of-20) from behind
