Two Illini basketball players injured in accident

Champaign, IL (Sports Network) – University of Illinois basketball players
Brian Carlwell and Jamar Smith were injured early Tuesday morning when their
car struck a tree.

Carlwell suffered a severe concussion and his condition at Carle Foundation
Hospital was upgraded from critical to serious condition. Smith also suffered
a concussion, and was treated and released.

“Certainly, our thoughts are on the health and recovery of our two student-
athletes, and in supporting Coach Weber and our basketball program,” athletic
director Ron Guenther said. “We will issue any updates should there be a
change in the condition of the two players.”

Smith, a sophomore center, is averaging 8.1 points and 1.9 assists for the
Fighting Illini, while Carlwell, a freshman center, is averaging 1.7 points
and 1.4 rebounds.

The Fighting Illini don’t play until Sunday against Northwestern.
