No. 6 A&M tops Oklahoma
Norman, OK (Sports Network) – Acie Law IV and Joseph Jones scored 21 points
apiece as sixth-ranked Texas A&M came from behind to beat Oklahoma 56-49 at
the Lloyd Noble Center.
Jones went 8-of-12 from the field for Texas A&M (22-4, 10-2 Big 12), which
bounced back from a 77-75 loss to Texas Tech on Tuesday.
David Godbold made a career-high five triples and scored a career-high
20 points for Oklahoma (15-10, 6-6), which has lost two straight since their
four-game winning streak. Nate Carter added 10 points for the Sooners, who
lost to the Aggies for the first time ever in Norman.
The Sooners led 38-37 as late at the 7-minute mark before Texas A&M went on a
8-0 run, capped by a Law reverse layup, putting the Aggies ahead 45-38 with
5:05 remaining in the contest.
Michael Neal cut Oklahoma’s lead with a three-point play, but Jones answered
with a triple at the 3:42 mark putting the lead at 48-41.
The Sooners got no closer than four points thereafter.
Law missed the front end of two one-and-one opportunities but rebounded the
second miss, was fouled and made both free-throws to put the Aggies’ ahead,
50-43, with 1:30 showing on the clock. He made four more free throws in the
final 32.6 seconds to seal the deal for the Aggies.
“It was a tough loss,” said Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel. “We missed some shots
in the second half when I thought we had some real good looks. A&M is a very
good team. They are one of the best teams in the country.”
Oklahoma shot just 7-of-30 in the second half.
With the score tied at 7, Oklahoma went on an 11-5 run, capped by an Austin
Johnson jumper putting the Sooners ahead 18-12.
Oklahoma led 26-19 at the break.
Law and Jones were the only two Aggies to score more than five points…Texas
A&M swept the season series 2-0 after coming into the season with a 1-25
record against Oklahoma…A&M outscored Oklahoma 23-12 in the paint.
