Smith’s three-pointer lifts Louisville over Marquette

Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) – It was a happy homecoming for Jerry Smith,
as the freshman guard nailed the winning three-pointer at the buzzer,
lifting Louisville to a 61-59 win over No. 12 Marquette.

Dominic James hit a free throw with 5.5 seconds remaining to give Marquette a
59-58 edge, but then Edgar Sosa dribbled up the court before passing the ball
to Smith for the winning shot.

Smith, who went to high school in Wauwatosa, less than 15 minutes from
Milwaukee, sent the ball from the right wing over the hands of Dan Fitzgerald
and through the basket to give Louisville (19-8, 9-4 Big East) its third
consecutive win.

Sosa ended with 15 points and Derrick Caracter added 14 for the Cardinals,
while Jerel McNeal led Marquette (21-7, 8-5) with 18 points.

Louisville led by as many as six in the opening half before settling for a
29-28 edge at the break.

Marquette was in front by as many as seven in the second through, the last
time at 57-50 on a jumper from James with 3:32 left. However, Smith hit back-
to-back threes for a 57-56 deficit, and eventually Sosa’s layup tied the game
at 58 with 11 seconds remaining.
