No. 20 Louisville routs St. John’s
Louisville, KY (Sports Network) – Terrence Williams’ 16 points, four rebounds
and four assists led the way as 20th-ranked Louisville steamrolled St. John’s,
72-48, at Freedom Hall.
Derrick Caracter posted 12 points for the Cardinals (20-8, 10-4 Big East),
winners in four straight. Brandon Jenkins added 10 points and four boards,
while Earl Clark contributed nine points and five rebounds for Louisville,
which played without forward Juan Palacios due to back spasms.
Anthony Mason recorded a game-high 19 points and dished out four assists for
the Red Storm (15-13, 6-9), who have dropped three of four. Lamont Hamilton
added 12 and nine rebounds, and Qa’rraan Calhoun had eight rebounds in the
Louisville scored the game’s first four points, then St. John’s reeled off
12 of the next 16 to take a four-point lead with just under seven minutes
played. However, the home team caught fire and ripped off six points
in a 24-second span to go up 14-12.
After Hamilton put the Storm up 15-14 with a free throw, the Cardinals
embarked on a 22-5 run through the remainder of the half for a 36-20 advantage
at the break.
Mason’s slam 5:47 into the second half brought the Red Storm within 44-30, but
they would get no closer as Louisville extended its lead to as much as 27
before coasting to the 24-point win.
Louisville has won five of the eight meetings…St. John’s shot a dismal 26
percent (15-of-57) from the field, and Louisville hit for 49 percent (29-
of-59)…The Cardinals’ bench outscored their opponents 30-5…Mason hit four
of his eight attempts from beyond the arc.
