No. 13 Salukis down Indiana State

Terre Haute, IN (Sports Network) – Jamaal Tatum and Tony Young both netted 15
points, as the 13th-ranked Southern Illinois Salukis, who have achieved their
highest ranking in program history, downed the Indiana State Sycamores, 58-50,
in a Missouri Valley Conference clash.

Matt Shaw scored nine points for Southern Illinois (24-5, 14-3), which has
earned 10 consecutive victories. Randal Falker added 10 rebounds in the win.

Marico Stinson scored 17 points for Indiana State (12-16, 5-12), which is
mired in a five-game losing skid. Twelve of the team’s last 13
outings have resulted in defeat, and nine of the 12 setbacks have come by
double figures. Mick Yelovich and Cole Holmstrom both added seven points in
the loss.

With the Sycamores trailing 53-47, Bryan Mullins hit a free throw with 39.5
seconds left to make it a three-possession game. However, Holmstrom drilled a
quick trey from the right wing with 30.3 seconds remaining to give ISU some

But, Young then converted a pair of free throws at 28.5. Gabe Moore launched a
desperation three that missed, and Shaw got the rebound. He next knocked down
a pair of free throws with 14.5 seconds on the clock to seal the win.

ISU shot 38 percent in the first half to edge a 27-25 halftime lead.

SIU blew the game open on a 15-4 run sparked by a Young trey midway through
the second half, however. Young’s jumper with 4:16 remaining notched a 50-40
lead for the Salukis heading down the stretch.
